What are New Ponies?

There are currently 3 different generations of My Little Ponies. The first generation or G1 ponies, are the originals from the 80's.

Second Generation My Little Ponies

After much angst, many petitions and a whole lot of griping, Hasbro finally re-released My Little Ponies in 1997. These are known as the second generation or G2's. These new ponies were met with mixed reviews. They looked nothing like the old My Little Ponies we all knew and loved. The familiar, chubby mold was replaced with a much harder, longer, leaner pony. There was no cute little show to help advertise the ponies and not a great deal of advertising period. After only 3 years, this new pony run was stopped in the US and Canada. However, these ponies continued to be manufactured for another year or two in many Europian countries, like Spain, France, Germany. These later G2 ponies have a small cult market that will pay dearly to get their hands on them!

The new ponies sparked huge debates in the pony community. Some loved them and maintained that they were just ponies after all. Others think of these ponies as Satan's Spawn and won't come within 100 meters of them. Personally, I think they weren't the ponies I great up with and loved, but I do have a few of the little guys running around. It all depends on what you like.

Third Generation My Little Ponies

In 2003, Hasbro once again released My Little Pony. The third generation or G3's. This time, the ponies were almost identical to the original My Little Ponies of the 80's, but a little smaller. This run has proved much more successful and is ongoing to this day. There are hundreds, if not thousands of new ponies. They also have their own mail orders, playsets, accessories, movies, and computer games.
